This six-day course is taught by Barney Nikolich, Emmy-nominated SFX makeup artist.


The course focuses on life casting, designing the prosthetic, basic sculpting, breaking down the sculpture, mould-making, casting and painting the appliances, and on the final prosthetic application. It includes and provides a demonstration of a full-face cast in silicone, techniques for casting and correcting positives, flat moulds and 3D transfer moulding processes, running silicones encapsulated with Super Baldiez, and techniques for pre-painting and finishing appliances with traditional application and colouring techniques.

Who is it for

Master Class benefits makeup artists who are serious contenders in the film makeup industry and are interested in the creation of different movie characters with the use of SFX makeup and prosthetics.

It is suitable for absolute beginners with no previous experience as well as to professionals who wish to refresh their skills and seeking professional enhancement.

You’ll establish strong technical skills and learn basic prosthetic skills.


Your week ahead

Over a week, you will attend 45 hours of classes with expert tutor, who will guide you through academically structured term times, allowing you extended practicing hours to concentrate on developing skills and accuracy in each area of your study.

Throughout the program you will be assessed in practical assignments, create work and get access to exclusive opportunities on your journey of learning and professional development. You will learn the techniques and gain the skills that are expected within the industry.

Lifecasting, designing the prosthetic and sculpture

Master class will start with a demonstration of a full face cast in silicone and then casting and correcting positives from this cast. You will learn to sculpt the appliances onto the life cast and the process of  dividing and floating the pieces.

Breaking down the pieces and further sculpture

Second day will  fully focus on detailed sculpting and texturing the separate pieces, preparing them for moulding.

Mould making for prosthetics

Discover the thinking behind mould making techniques and choices of materials. We will explore two piece moulds in PU resin, plaster and silicone and flat mould demonstrations.You will also learn 3D transfer moulding processes.

Casting and painting appliances

Your learning will continue with running silicones with Super Baldiez encapsulates in two piece and flat moulds. The day will finish with the techniques of pre painting and finishing the appliances.
